Have you ever heard of the Brazilian cartoonist who is considered the Walt Disney of Brazil? If your answer is no, Luana Ferreira of BBC News’ brings to light a person usually left in the dark. Mauricio de Sousa is his name and a great example of why you should never give up on your dreams. Sousa has always had a passion for drawing cartoons. After being turned down by several newspapers in pursuit of being a cartoonist, Sousa “took a job as a crime reporter on Brazil’s best selling titles – Folha de Sao Paulo”. Patiently waiting his time, Sousa’s newspaper drawings were eventually accepted 5 years later. Over six decades later, Sousa has sold over one billion comics/books and is a household name in Brazil. Sousa is the holder of the Brazilian Presidential Medal of Honor, and his cartoon character Monica, was named a United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (Uncief) ambassador.
Harriet Tubman once said, “Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” Mauricio de Sousa is the true embodiment of Tubman’s quote. He grew up wanting to be a cartoonist but instead took a job as a crime reporter to build his network and grow his brand. Instead of giving up on his dreams, he continued on his journey of one day fulfilling them. At the age of 80, Mauricio continues to create new artwork and grow his company. In the words of Jason Nesmith from the movie Galaxy Quest, “Never give up, never surrender.” Thank you for your inspiration Mauricio de Sousa.
