According to a Hermes Investment Management study, for the first time over 50% of investors believe gender diversity is necessary to run a successful corporation. In a recent poll, 51% stated “gender diversity among senior managers is important or vitally important”. In addition, the study found that 30% of respondents felt that ethnic diversity was also important.
Currently numbers are down in the area of female board directors as the UK is slightly below the European average (23.3% vs 25% respectively). Also diversity on the FTSE 100 boards decreased slightly, falling from 39% to 38%.
Despite this, these new numbers are important as it highlights the mindset of the country moving forward. If increasing gender representation in senior management is important, steps will be taken to rectify the current situation. The future looks bright for women in corporate UK.
