Beginning Friday, Sept 30th, Facebook will add three new languages (Maltese, Pulaar, and Corsican) to its repertoire. Currently, the social media giant translates into 101 languages.
Facebook users are to thank for the recent additions. As Jessica Guynn from the USA Today explains, “Human-powered translation is critical to Facebook’s growth. More than 1 billion of the 1.7 billion people who use Facebook speak a language other than English. That number will undoubtedly increase as more people connect to the Internet.”
Facebook’s overall goal is to translate into all languages requested by its users. With 40 additional languages in the process of translation, Facebook looks to continue to move towards their goal.
