The SAG-AFTRA is partnering with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to increase African American opportunities within the entertainment industry.  The new internship is “Co-sponsored by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and the Entertainment Industry College Outreach Program,”

Billed as “the first of its kind to take on Hollywood’s pipeline problem,” the program will provide students with an immersive, real-world work experience designed to supplement their studies and prepare them for careers in the entertainment, media and communications industries.

From #OscarsSoWhite to the low African American numbers behind the scenes in film, this internship is a great opportunity to increase diversity within the entertainment ranks.  Only time will tell if this initiative will create sustainable traction, but for now programs increasing minority and women opportunities is a blessing.
