Did you know that the number of African American medical students is on the decline? Currently in the United States, only 3% of practicing physicians are black. Duke University is looking to reverse that trend with its new campaign, A Black Man in a White Coat, highlighting black men in the medicine industry.
In addition, “Duke has long hosted a summer medical school for minority graduates in college science programs. Even middle school groups visit Duke Medical School for hands-on learning experiences.” The purpose isn’t necessarily to convince kids to become doctors, but to open their minds about the possibilities within healthcare including the opportunities within the nursing and researching fields.
