The Census Bureau is looking to contract with a mobile telecommunications company to supply smartphones for it’s door to door field surveys during the 2020 US Census.  "The bureau will need the eventual awardee to ship and help set up a potential 75,000 devices prior to an August 2019 test and 400,000 in February 2020 for actual enumeration and nonresponse follow up, it estimated in a request for information from March.“  The purpose is to have dedicated mobile devices instead of requiring enumerators to bring their own phone or mobile device.

Census CIO Kevin Smith stated the department will be flexible when working with different operating systems and "work on whatever operating system this new procurement puts in their hands."

The 2020 Census will be an interesting yet necessary update to how Americans are tracked in today’s world.  Hopefully the winner of this contract will do a great job technology wise to ensure we are capturing the necessary information.
