Scott Pruitt’s nomination for head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a big win for oil and fossil fuel promoters. Pruitt has been heavily against most of the Obama Administration policies affecting big oil profits. Currently Pruitt “is part of a lawsuit to block the Obama EPA’s efforts to tackle global warming via the Clean Power Plan, which aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from power plants.”
For those new to the department, the EPA “ is in charge of creating and enforcing federal regulations around air and water pollution, largely guided by laws like the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act, which were originally passed by Congress in the 1970s.” Under the Obama Administration, regulation for cars, trucks, oil, gas, and power plants have increased in an effort to reduce carbon emissions and other greenhouse gasses believed to cause climate change.
Since becoming Oklahoma’s top prosecutor, Pruitt has “ joined or led state lawsuits to block virtually every major federal regulation around climate and air pollution that Obama’s EPA has put forward. He sued to stop a major rule to limit mercury pollution from coal plants. He sued to stop a rule to reduce smog pollution that crossed state lines. (Both efforts to sue were unsuccessful in court.)”
Now with this appoint Pruitt will have to ability to make his dreams a reality. Don’t expect it to happen overnight however as many of Obama’s policies could take years to overturn (if at all).
