Model / medical student Deddeh Howard can’t find a modeling agency to work for. According to the NY Daily News “Howard says that when she applies to modeling agencies she is almost always rejected on the grounds that the agency already has a black model.”
While many will point to the prior success of black models including Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell, the truth is there aren’t alot of options when entering the model scene as a black woman.
This is why Deddeh Howard has created “Black Mirror” in conjunction with photographer Raffael Dickreuter. "“Black Mirror,” takes famous ads featuring such stars as Kendall Jenner, Gisele Bundchen, Gigi Hadid and Kate Moss — then recreates them perfectly with Howard as the supermodel.“ As The Fashion Spot has noted "75% of the 8,727 models who worked the runways in the New York, London, Paris and Milan fall fashion shows were white.” Although this is an improvement, it still doesn’t grant opportunities to the Deddeh Howard’s of the world.
Which is why her latest project is so important in creating a fashion voice for diversity. Because women of color can look just as beautiful in iconic scenes.
