If you recall, one of the very first articles I wrote for Global Diversity News (now Supplierty News), was on the need for a Madam CJ Walker film. Well, here is something even better.
Lebron James’ production company SpringHill Entertainment is currently working on its first scripted drama about the life of America’s first female self made millionaire, Madam CJ Walker. The project will connect the NBA Superstar with Oscar winner Octavia Spencer (The Help, Hidden Figures). According to Variety Magazine, “Netflix is interested in the series and is the likely destination.”
The drama will be a limited series based on the book written by A’Lelia Bundles, Walker’s great-great-granddaughter entitled “On Her Own Ground”. The film reflects the mission of SpringHill Entertainment, which seeks to “spotlight the hidden African-American figures who helped shape American history.” In addition to the CJ Walker story, the “company recently donated $2.5 million to the Smithsonian’s Muhammad Ali exhibit at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.”
In addition to Spencer and James, Nicole Asher is set to write and co-exec produce the series while Kasi Lemmons of “Black Nativity” will act as direct for the pilot.
