San Francisco’s BART may extend Small Business Program to include LGBT businesses

In San Francisco, the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system is looking to to rebuild its aging infrastructure.  Due to the possible new upgrades, BART organizers are planning on extending the current Small Business Program to include more LGBT businesses.

The current Small Business Program recently added a local small business preference to include companies in the Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco counties.  According to SF Gate, “The new proposal would mean LGBT businesses would receive a 5 percent bid preference when it comes to selecting a contractor for applicable upcoming construction projects.”

The agency’s Board of Directors will vote on the new proposition September 14th. According to BART Board President Rebecca Saltzman, “BART has established a track record of prioritizing local, small, disadvantaged, and women-run businesses and this change will be a natural extension of those efforts.”
