According to a recent year end article by Philadelphia, PA is the best city for diversity in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.  The report was based on several metrics, starting from the company taking at a look “at data for the 50 cities with the largest STEM workforce.”  Below is a quick list of the top ten cities for diversity in America:

  1. Philadelphia, PA
  2. Charlotte, NC
  3. Sacramento, CA
  4. New York, NY
  5. Oakland, CA
  6. Chicago, IL
  7. Houston, TX
  8. Los Angeles, CA
  9. San Francisco, CA
  10. Washington, DC

A quick analysis can easily see that California stands out for diversity with four of the ten cities being from that state.  In addition, when it comes to diversity, on average Latino Americans fall under 10% of the represented workforce while Asian Americans hit as high as 37% representation.

In addition, a few other key findings found that, “across the cities with the largest STEM workforces, women tend to be under-represented. On average women only occupy 26.4% of STEM jobs in each of the cities we analyzed.”  Lastly, all cities listed are large heavily diverse areas.  No city on this list is that surprising and seems to lend to the fact that, the more diverse the population, the greater the chance of STEM diversity.
