Diversity is growing in America.  In 2015, babies born to minority or mixed parents overtook those born to white parents for the first time in American history.  As the demographics continue to shift, the importance of companies that are inclusive to diverse ethnicities and cultures grows more and more paramount.  With studies revealing the financial benefit of diverse teams, Statista and Forbes connected on a recent list showcasing the best employers for diversity in the United States.

The report surveyed 30,000 US employees in August 2017 and ranked employers based on “share of women filling top executive teams and boards” as well as “whether companies have a department or position responsible for promoting diversity.”  While I do wonder what the list would have looked like if the report was taken a few months later at the height of the #MeToo movement, I do believe the current rankings are a good highlight of companies that focused on diversity and inclusion before what most likely will be a shift towards (much needed) workplace change.

The top 10 best workplaces for diversity in America, according to Forbes and Statista include:

  1. Northern Trust
  2. Smithsonian Institution
  3. Levy
  4. Intuit
  5. Harvard University
  6. Principal Financial Group
  7. Emory University
  8. Wegmans Food Markets
  9. Keller Williams Realty
  10. AbbVie

It’s interesting to note that three of the ten are headquartered in Illinois (Northern Trust, Levy, AbbVie), with a pretty good compilation of industries from education to banking to healthcare.
