Last month, Amazon agreed to institute a new policy to help increase diversity in its board of directors membership. Originally opposing the shareholder proposal, Amazon ultimately relented at a time when diversity is gaining more and more support. Currently the company has 10 board members, “all of whom are white, including three women.”
The new policy will act similar to the NFL’s “Rooney rule” where Amazon will be required to interview at least one minority for an open board position.
In a recent US Securities and Exchange Commission, Amazon revealed their new plans, stating that “The Amazon Board of Directors has adopted a policy that the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee include a slate of diverse candidates, including women and minorities, for all director openings.”
