In 2017, Nielsen reported that more than 73 million people in the US listen to podcasts on a monthly basis, while an additional 48 million listen to podcasts weekly. Almost every American household is familiar with the term podcasting with about half being fans . With such a large population of support for the industry, Google and PRX have announced a new commitment to help people interested in podcasting launch their own.
The initiative, known as Google Podcasts will bring Google and PRX to the forefront of the future of podcasting. For those new to the industry, PRX is a public radio distribution marketing company that is behind an array of successful shows which include The American Life.
PRX CEO Kerri Hoffman recently stated in a press release that his company wants “to dramatically change the podcasting ecosystem and support more access. Training is a primary way to close the skills gap that keep many from being successful in podcasting. This is particularly true for those who are underrepresented in other forms of media. We hope to elevate more diverse voices and empower others with tools to create and share.”
Google and PRX overall goal for the program is to empower and train minorities while offering free educational tools that will allow them to showcase their work. The program will officially kick off January 12, 2019 and recipients will also receive seed funding, and mentorship. If you are interested, you must apply before November 18, 2018.
