Rutgers University president Robert L. Barchi has announced the addition of $20 million to the school’s systemwide Faculty Diversity Hiring Initiative. This will extend the existing $22 million initiative to 2024. The objective of the initiative is improve the recruitment, mentoring and retention of professors from underrepresented and diverse groups. Barchi said that this initiative highlights the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. However, several distinguished professors have criticized Barchi’s spending priorities, particularly for not investing sufficiently in inclusion and diversity.

The university’s faculty union is also planning a strike over equitable pay for women and adjunct professors.
