NASCAR has recruited two former collegiate athletes Brehanna Daniels and Breanna O’Leary for its Driver for Diversity Pit Crew Program. Daniels played for the women’s basketball team of Norfolk State University while O’Leary played for the women’s softball team of Alcorn State University.
Daniels and O’Leary excelled in NASCAR’S combine and tryout despite competing mostly against male contestants. They were tested for strength, quickness, speed and general athleticism. They will be working as tire changers for the No. 52 car in the Monster Energy Cup Series which has been struggling in the 2019 season.
Daniels said that being a tire changer is similar to being a point guard because you need to be calm and poised and be able to read the situation you are in. For O’Leary, playing softball and being a pit crew gives her the same feeling and she feels she has to perform well because victory is on the line.
Daniels and O’Leary hope to become part of top NASCAR teams in the future.
