Military Times | The inaugural Employing U.S. Vets Conference, co-hosted by Military Veterans and VETS Indexes, was held in New York City. The event, which was designed to provide networking opportunities and share challenges and best practices in post-military employment, was attended by representatives from almost 100 Fortune 500 corporations, recruitment firms and veterans advocacy groups.

There were panel discussions on recruitment of military talent, development of a veteran culture within companies, Guard and Reserve employment challenges and hiring of military spouses.

Keynote speaker Chris Cortez, a former Marine Corps major general and Microsoft vice president of military affairs, highlighted the importance of hiring veterans and a diverse employee base in driving innovation. He also said he aims to build a “veterans-ready” workplace at Microsoft.

Guest speaker Lorraine Wilson, JUST Capital director of investment products, discussed the importance of transparency in veteran recruitment efforts, particularly in terms of public accountability. The organizers plan to make the conference a periodic event in order to help disseminate information related to the hiring and employment of veterans.
