Contracting with the federal government can provide small businesses with established customers and growth opportunities. According to Donna Little, director of the Louisiana Small Business Development Center at McNeese, federal agencies through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are committed to sourcing products and services from small businesses. She also said that the government spends billions of dollars annually with these businesses. As an example, small entrepreneurs can offer engineering services, office supplies or cleaning services at the Fort Polk army base.
To get involved with federal contracting, small businesses only need to get a DUNS number and register at SAM.gov. Little explained that all the requirements can be obtained for free.
