The Governing Institute has released a report titled “5 Trends That Are Reshaping How Governments Buy.” The survey examined the purchasing practices and policies in 29 U.S. states focusing on technology implementation and contract management.

The findings reveal that the majority of states are adopting a more modern approach to purchasing. The five key trends include: the use of new contracting strategies that improve acquisition effectiveness; state procurement officers’ establishment of closer relationships with suppliers; implementation of solutions-based contracts that provide more responsive engagements; maturity of states in the application of best-value strategies; and the application of data and analytics in all phases of the procurement process.

The report also ranked the leading states in terms of best procurement practices. The top five states include New York, Ohio, Massachusetts, Georgia and Michigan.
