Black-owned consumer technology company Essence Ventures has appointed Caroline Wanga to the newly created position of Chief Growth Officer. In her new role, Wanga will be responsible for leading new growth opportunities and market strategy across the company’s portfolio which include Naturally Curly, Afropunk and ESSENCE Communications Inc.
Wanga previously served as vice president of human resource and Chief Culture, Diversity & Inclusion Officer at Target where she led the creation of a diverse and inclusive work environment and the promotion of an inclusive society with accountability for inclusive guest experiences.
Essence Ventures’ founder and chair Richelieu Dennis said they are thrilled to have Caroline on board to help provide guidance, leadership and cohesion required to accelerate the growth of their portfolio of community-centric brands. For Wanga, she said she plans to bring her experience to help Essence increase value to partners, advance its brands and develop more purposeful approaches to serving communities of color.
