Issa Rae, the creator and star of the comedy-drama series “Insecure,” mandates that all of her sets have to be at least 60% diverse. Her goal is to create a pipeline for people from diverse backgrounds to rise through the entertainment industry.
In a panel discussion titled “The Mirror Only Has One Face” at the Cannes Lions advertising festival, Rae challenged the global marketing and advertising industries to follow her example. She also called on them to task people to spread the word about diversity across the board.
In her next project called “Rap sh!t,” Rae wants to have locals behind the scenes, including writers. She believes it will add more authenticity to the shows and get the audience more immersed in the story.
